How our Belief System can bring us down

The challenge in realizing that deeply ingrained beliefs can be wrong — and how to change them.

How our Belief System can bring us down

Today I'm discussing something confronted with every day, especially since becoming a Holistic Health Coach: the challenge in realizing deeply ingrained beliefs can be wrong.

Our ego, culture, and comfort make accepting this very hard.

The Reality Check

When I started my health journey, I was different. I read things that shocked me — things I found absurd and dangerous. I was skeptical when confronted with ideas challenging my paradigm. I was in denial because this information pushed me outside my comfort zone and threatened my way of living.

Whatever the topic, the first time you question a deeply ingrained belief, your ego resists. It's scary to realize something you were completely sure of might not be correct. It's confusing and induces many more questions and insecurity.

If a life staple is suddenly proven wrong, moving from passive acceptance of reality to active life management feels unattainable — especially in our disempowering society. When you realize this might not be the only questionable subject you're facing, it gets harder.

The Ostrich Approach

Many prefer not dealing with horrible realities and necessary changes. They prefer not knowing — like ostriches with heads in sand. Life's already hard, right?

But this is just denial. It might be easier short-term to close your eyes and live in a falsely reassuring reality. But this can only last so long. Eventually, life challenges these same people, in some way, forcing them to rethink.

The Fat Example

For decades, we were told: AVOID FATS, especially saturated fats: FAT = DEVIL. They make us sick, increase cholesterol, increase heart disease risk.

This is deeply ingrained. I bought only low-fat foods, thinking it was better.

Today, we see change (slowly). Avocados and coconut oil are everywhere. Today we know:

  • -It was based on badly run research
  • -National recommendations about fats are quietly changing
  • -Low-fat foods are toxic
  • -Processing foods to reduce natural fats is harmful
  • -Trans-fats are harmful
  • -The result is dead, toxic food

Change is here, knocking on your door. Unfortunately it's very slow — corporate interests oppose it.

Many More Examples

Many commonly believed "facts" are very questionable. We can't deny evidence anymore. Thanks to the internet, it's harder to hide what's really happening.

But be careful:

  • -Great insightful info exists on the web
  • -So does a lot of crap

Be ready to accept: Many things you're convinced of can be false. Open up and accept that if evidence is there, you must shift your belief system. It can be scary and you might question your identity. But it's about being open. It's time to awaken.

Healthy Skepticism

You're skeptical? Don't change — this is essential. Be skeptical of new information AND your own beliefs. Use your powerful mind. Be critical. Reach your own conclusions.

NO TABOOS.

Whether health, politics, or corporate corruption... we must accept things change. What we consider "holy truth" might be a big fake. That's okay. We're evolving, growing, becoming empowered to take better decisions for ourselves, loved ones, and the world.

Hope this helps open your mind. You can be as skeptical as you want — just don't reject or deny what's actually happening. Accept that things change. Hopefully for the best.

In Love and Happiness,

Stephanie
